RavenBot Workshop : Carvings from Q2, 2024

#225, Petey “Pogo” Shipswright

24.05 Dale Green was my only repeat instructor this year. Dale has a more realistic style so this fellow was a good challenge. He was carved from a deckhand roughout and Dale said he’d never seen anyone use a shock-absorber for a peg leg.

#224, Mage Cyrus Colepyre

24.05 Having the opportunity to carve with Rich Weatherbee was fantastic. This wizard was based on a santa roughout, but I can’t stay in the lines with these carvings so it went on its own path. Rich helped me see some carving techniques and approach eyes differently.

#223, “Board Meeting”

24.05 These face studies were carved during Joe You’s session at the Rocky Mountain Carvers Roundup. This session was the most impactful for me. Joe’s understanding of the face and his approach to carving it are aspirational.

#222, Micah Hempstead

24.05 Another carving from the Rocky Mountain Carvers Roundup. This carving was from Roger Stegall’s session. Roger is a leading carver of traditional western-style cowboys and southern-style hillbillies. My take was more dirty footed, long-haired hippy…

#221, Bernard Neverush

24.05 I attended the Rocky Mountain Carvers Roundup this year for the second time. Five days of carving with five different instructors. Bernard Neverush is my take on John Overby’s flat plane traditional carving that aims for longer and smoother, sometimes minimal, carving cuts.

#220, Bert Jamon

24.05 Carved from a Bruce Ankeny “Big Pig” roughout, Bert has a content smile and sports a little ridgeback mohawk plus tattoos on each side.

#219, 219 Stonestep Tower

24.05 I was gifted some cottonwood bark by a fellow carver (thanks Kevin) and after finishing Jarl (#216) was looking for something a bit simpler and still interesting so started working on my first cottonwood bark carving. It’s quite different (chippy and ‘dirty’) carving compared to basswood, but holds some unique properties and allows you to retain the outer bark for some natural texture. This one has room for little battery-powered tealights in the back. I’ll likely carve more bark - it really sings out for a treeman of some sort.

#218, Jarl Fifrildi

24.04 This one is pretty special IMO. After carving several stout & stern warriors and fierce faces I wanted to attempt a warrior that showed a softer side. This was carved from a 4” block and started with a clay model, time on the bandsaw, time in the vice with an Automach carver (BZZZZZ) and then lots of time hand carving and looking.

#217, Mage Abram Stonetower

24.04 Carved this with knife only from Badger State Blades while participating at a craft fair. Sepia and India ink give the boulders/stairs some monumental weight. Finished with furniture oil only.

#216, Mage Edward Quinacridone

24.04 So far, I’m enjoying turning santa roughouts into mages and wizards rather than St. Nick. This wizened wizard was carved from a Bruce Ankeny, fun details and painting.

#215, Gerald Homfolgers

24.04 My second carving based on a Wayne Laramore universal santa/gnome/hippy roughout. I’m writing this at 5:30AM and have been up for more than an hour, time for coffee..

#213-214, Keelhauler Commission

24.04 Two Serenity/Firefly-inspired carvings. Mal’s pistol plaque “I AIM TO MISBEHAVE” and a relief-carved sign of his artwork, plus a little junk to go along for the ride.
