Big things out of a small studio…

I’ve joked that my shooting space is a shoebox, it’s not quite that small, it measures about 8’ x 9’. I don’t know why our house’s previous owners chose the size and location but I expect they were looking to maximize space. Regardless I’m happy to have it.

Over the last few years, I’ve shot quite a bit in there. Product photography for my previous employer, personal passion projects, and now a growing stack of eyewear and accessories for a client.

The examples shown here are a slice of this new body of work. Eyewear is challenging to shoot with its reflections, dust appearing out of the ether, and fingerprints simply thinking their way into existence. While I’m shooting for the cleanest exposure, a fair amount of retouching is always expected. These photos have been captured under both strobe lighting and constant LED lighting depending on the theme and desired aesthetic.

This photography project spanned quite a few weeks. I began with a range of test shots, working with the client to find the sweet spot between the product hero and its environment. Additionally, simpler product photos were crafted for use in online product listings. Environments and props were gathered to establish a strong tactical theme without being too gun-focused.

An unseen component to this work is the post-production work beyond retouching - file versioning - many sizes and crop ratios were needed for use across ecommerce and digital marketing. All of those details and deliverables tracked through an Airtable base for easy reference.

There are about 20 individual styles shot in this manner. This project wrapped with nearly 300 selects and over 800 final cropped/resized versions.

“Hero” shots were captured for each style for use in ecommerce pages, digital marketing and more. Additionally, isometric photos were captured to show all of the lens color options - some styles have up to four lens colors. Careful handling of the product reduced the retouching required, but you can’t escape dust. :)

Blackside Collection

Five styles that are fully blacked out, no logo pop or accent color. Shot to be a bit brooding and serious, with accents on the frame arm for a dramatic logo hit. Color themed versions were shot for audience-specific marketing.
