Product Content

Hey, surprise, you’re a writer! If you told me years ago how much time I would be spending crafting and working with copy and maintaining them in giant tables I wouldn’t have believed you. But my experience is that to produce catalogs, product info sheets, retail displays, e-commerce copy and the like, that information needs to be ORGANIZED and easily accessible by the team. I began a skunkworks project using Airtable, a cloud-based database. That system matured into a robust source of product information that was vetted by partners in product and legal. I called it the “ARK” - Always Ready Knowledgebase - if the information wasn’t on the ARK, then it was lost. Later, the product team adopted a PLM (Product Lifecycle Management tool) and we began merging data between the two. Technical product information was available as well as more consumer-facing versions of features and benefits. The ARK housed product information for thousands of products across an entire head-to-toe product line.

Content is more than words. In addition to text-based content, product content includes the development and maintenance of consistent iconography, IP marks and feature illustrations, etc. These icons and IP brand marks need to be visually consistent within the larger brand identity. A good iconography system is highly functional and versatile across their different use occasions. These systems were shared internally with the creative and product teams via our DAM as well as CC libraries for select projects.
